Mediterranean migrant rescue
More than 2000 migrants trying to reach Europe were rescued from the central Mediterranean in a single day last week, many of them saved by crew members of the Phoenix ? a rescue ship operated by the Malta based Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS).
Small rescue teams reach out to rubber boats packed with refugees seeking asylum in Europe, most of them from Sub-Saharan Africa. Dealing with desperate refugees on cramped lifeboats, the teams struggle to maintain order as they distribute life jackets.
Once they have established safety among the refugees, the teams begin shuttling passengers ? starting with women and children ? back to the Phoenix. At times, these teams attempt to rescue more than a hundred migrants in a single operation. Then, Italian coast guard ships deliver those rescued by MOAS to Italian ports.
According to the International Organization for Migration, nearly 32,000 refugees have arrived in Europe by sea in 2017 and more than 650 have died or are missing.Credit: Darrin Zammit Lupi（REUTERS）
